Maryland from a Different View

Have you ever wondered what Maryland looks like to a bird in flight?

Local aerial photographer/videographer Larry Rogers of Mid-Atlantic Aerial Videography and Photography shows us Maryland from a different view in this exclusive interview.

Rogers captures stunning photos and videos of Maryland from the sky using a quad copter + GoPro combination that can fly about 3,000 feet in any direction. The mechanism runs on battery, and it can fly for about 25 minutes per charge. I was curious about Rogers' profession after seeing his work, so I asked him a few questions.

The Annapolitan: How did you get into this profession?
Larry Rogers: The reason I got into aerial videography and photography is a cousin of mine from North Carolina was posting pictures using the same device to capture aerial at a seldom-seen vantage point. You normally have photos anyone can capture (ground level, out of the window of a tall building, scenic overlooks, etc.), or you have photos or videos from a helicopter or airplane that should be at least 1,000 feet above the ground. This is the true bird’s eye view, from 50 to 400 feet above in tight urban settings, rural country environments, over wildlife that would never let a human near, all for the low cost of a few thousand dollars.

TA: What kinds of projects do you work on for clients?
LR: I have been kind of just practicing at this point while the Federal Aviation Administration irons out the commercial use of these devices. This has been beneficial as I have been able to practice during the least aesthetically pleasing time of the year in Maryland [Editor's note: winter]. I have entertained conversations with several businesses (marinas, cinematographers, colleges and more) and plan to begin commercial operation in the spring/summer.

TA: Have you ever crashed?
LR: Yes, several times, but I am getting better.

TA: A lot of people are probably wondering this: Can you spy on people with the quad copter?
LR: Not that I really want to, but no. I usually shoot in wide angle, which makes everything look far away. And secondly, I have a quad copter that sounds like a swarm of bees and is flashing red and green lights, so I am sneaking up on nobody.

TA: Where has your work been seen/where can we find your work?
LR: My personal work has been featured on The Weather Channel, in The Maryland Gazette and in The Capital, with photos occasionally appearing on other local and national news outlets and on social media. I am not the only one in the country doing this, and not the only one in Maryland, either. I began publishing videos to YouTube in October 2013 and founded a Facebook page to share pictures and videos in December 2013. In January, I added who I consider to be the only other person in Maryland who is doing exactly what I am doing (and doing it well) as an administrator to the Facebook page. His name is David Butts of Annapolis, Md., and he is extremely talented and has brought a different perspective to what I was trying to accomplish with this page.

Five Favorites

This year, I'm trying to be better about keeping up with my favorite bloggers.

I recently downloaded the bloglovin' app, which makes it a thousand times easier. Bloglovin' lets you easily read posts from your favorite blogs in one convenient place, on your mobile device or on your computer. I don't want to overwhelm you guys, so I'm only going to list five of my absolute favorite bloggers that I derive style inspiration from on a daily basis. They are as follows.

1. Linda Juhola at P.S. I Love Fashion.
I mean really, could she be anymore perfect!? A 24-year-old blogging from Sweden, Juhola has great taste in high fashion and looks good in almost anything.

2. Sarah Vickers at Classy Girls Wear Pearls.
This New Englander has great classic preppy style. She and her fiancé, Kiel, run an accessories company called Kiel James Patrick. What I would give to have her closet...

3. Brenna Mari at Chic Street Style.
With a self-described style of "vintage prep turned girly bohemian," Mari seriously knows what she's doing. She is a Stella & Dot stylist and also works as a personal stylist.

4. Carly Heitlinger at The College Prepster.
A Florida native, Georgetown University alumna, and New York City resident, Heitlinger is purely preppy and pulls her style from all over the country. She is crafty, creative, and has great taste. She finds niche products from brands I probably would never find on my own. Definitely worth following!

5. Julia at SocietyGrl.
An anonymous Twitter account-turned-personal blog, SG is full of inspiration. Her photos are gorgeous, and she knows how to put an outfit together.

Honorable Mentions

Caitlin Coving at Southern Curls & Pearls
Dorothy at Prep in Your Step

Monday Must-Haves

Now that Halloween is over, we can shift our focus.

Instead of thinking about how we're going to craft our slutty Franzia costumes, we can start thinking about planning a beautiful Thanksgiving spread and which wines to serve at our holiday parties. I love this time of year. It seems everyone is in good spirits, and it's a great time to reconnect with old friends and family.

And although it's been warm, I can't stop myself from getting excited for the holidays. Here are my picks to help you gear up for the holiday season.
Monday Must Haves II

1. Pretty paper. Thank you notes are a must for the holidays, so why not say it with elegance? I love this anchor note set from the Design Darling boutique.

2. Caramel brûlée latte. IT'S BACK: My all-time favorite drink at Starbucks! I'm beyond excited--after countless PSLs this fall, I'm ready for a change. With the return of the caramel brûlée latte on Nov. 1 also came holiday cups, the gingerbread latte, and the peppermint mocha. The holiday drinks can be really sweet, so if you want to tone it down, try ordering your favorite with only one pump of syrup or an extra shot of espresso.

3. Oxblood nails. This deep red is the perfect color for fall/winter, and it looks beautiful accented with gold. Pictured: Essie in Poor Li'l Rich Girl.

4. Collar necklaces. A great way to add sparkle to any outfit, a collar necklace can make a simple J.Crew t-shirt look like a million bucks.

5. Fleece Shep shirt. My Shep shirt is one of my favorite things in my closet. It's so comfortable and versatile. Vineyard Vines has released a fleece version, and I couldn't be more excited! Also available in Holly green.

6. Sassy mugs. I love love love this mug from Ashley Brooke Designs.

7. Cute slippers. Perfect for lounging and for Christmas morning, these slippers are cozy and cute. Pictured: Muk Luks.

8. Hunter + Rag & Bone. OMG. A collaboration between Hunter and Rag & Bone...what could be more amazing!? Together, they designed this beautiful structured rain boot, also available in a short version. Buy them here.

9. Yoga. I'm reconnecting with my yoga mat this week, and you should too. It's an awesome way to stay healthy and active during the colder months. Pictured: The Mat by Lululemon.

Namaste, betches. Have a great week. xo

Celebrating Movember

Happy Movember!
In case you're late to the party, Movember, or "mustache November," is the time of year men across the globe attempt to grow mustaches. Even if you can't grow a sweet stache, you can still be involved. So how are you celebrating Movember?

Ken Clausen, founder of Lax Stache Madness.

Lax Stache Madness
Surrounding the popular endeavors of November is Ken Clausen's Lax Stache Madness charity initiative. The UVA alum/Denver Outlaw launched Lax Stache Madness to rally the lacrosse community to raise money for the Headstrong Foundation, which was founded in memory of Hofstra lacrosse player Nicholas Colleluori. Nick lost his battle with Hodgkin's lymphoma, a blood cancer, in 2006. Read Nick's story here.

Participants pay $15 to register, and they are encouraged to show off their staches through social media. Though the campaign targets the lacrosse community, anyone can register and receive the perks as a bonus! Read more about Lax Stache Madness and register here.

Things you probably need
Just because you can't grow a mustache doesn't mean you can't participate in Movember! From jewelry to Toms to drink accessories, you can find just about anything you want with a mustache on it.

Know your mustaches
Clausen cites Mustaches of the 19th Century to explain the different types of mustaches and other important mustache-related terms. Here are my favorites:
Business Mustache: The work-a-day mustache for both the working class and decent gentlemen.
Overhand Twist: The twisted end of a handlebar mustache that curves upward toward the eyes.
Waterfall (also Lip Waterfall): A mustache style where the tips are grown long and allowed droop past both corners of the mouth. The modern mustache style that must closely relates is called a Fu Manchu in the vulger tongue.
Faceshelf: A beard and sideburn combination grown together into a single line of whiskers. An advanced form of mustachery that should only be attempted by an adept of the art. Also known as The Chester A. Arthur after the 21st President of these United States.
Handlebar: A mustache grown to have long sides that is held rigid by wax or other products to keep it from dropping below the mouth. Term originated amoung shocked travelers who were gravely assaulted when natives mistook their faces for bicycles.
See the rest of the terms here.

Happy Movember! xo
